An update on how this is going

Short version, the more I sing, the more range I get. When I started the easiest scale for me to sing was G to G. That is bottom line of the bass clef to to top space of the bass clef. I could go to the Eb below that low G and to the D above the higher.

Now the most comfortable scale for me to sing is Bb to Bb. That is from The flatted second line of the bass clef to the space above. I've lost something on the low end as I can no longer reliably hit that Eb but I can get the f just above it with good projection. It's on the top end where I can no go as far as the G that corresponds to the second line on the treble clef. That is two octaves and a one full step.

My ear is also getting better. So not much blogging but lots of great progress on the actual singing front.

A Monday Tune

Yes, I have let this slide. The house is being renovated. We have had a cabinet maker, a tiler, a painter and three carpenters running around what is really just a cottage.

Anyway, here (courtesy of Ukulele Hunt) is a tune. It's not anything I can imagine singing and playing myself, not least because it is sung in Portuguese. I like it. It's a happy uplifting tune.

Watch it once just to enjoy it and then watch it again looking for changes in the music itself. You'll notice that all the variation in arrangement and all the clever camera work is there to distract you from how little variation there is in this song. It's the same very simple patterns replayed over and over again. This is true of most pop songs. Take the icing off and they don't really have much to them. Mind you, if the icing is good enough maybe it doesn't matter.

Greensleeves at last

The construction and the effects of constantly living in a just a few dusty rooms got to me and I let things slide here a while.

Anyway, here is the music to Greensleeves as promised a few weeks ago. Click on the image to get a larger picture. Note: As a baritone, I sing this two octaves below where it is written.

Monday Tune

Awfully late in the day, here is an ukulele-free version of Greensleeves. This is by the King's Singers and they are really quite amazing.

I'll have some music up in a baritone-voice friendly key tomorrow.

A new tune to learn

I posted Lew Dite's version of Froggie Went a Courtin' yesterday.

Here is some music for baritone voice. (The actual singing will be two octaves below where it is written).

Singing to yourself

The other day, I walked right up main street singing to myself. That isn't an unusual thing. For me I mean.

But it hit me that a lot of the singing we do is useless for actually developing our voices. For I sang quietly as I always do when singing to myself. I didn't want anyone to hear me.

Real singing shouldn't be like that. For starters, how are we going to learn to sing on key if we can't even hear ourselves? And what is the point of singing if no one can hear us?
